NORMAN, Okla. -
Oklahoma State's women's tennis team defeated fourth-seeded TCU, 4-2, in the quarterfinals of the Big 12 Championships in Norman, Okla., on Friday afternoon. With the win, the Cowgirls will appear in the conference tournament semifinals for the first time since 2007.
The Cowgirls (14-7) notched the first point of the match when Kanyapat Narattana defeated Monika Sirilova in straight sets on five, 6-1, 6-2. The Horned Frogs responded with a point of their own, however, when Simona Parajova of TCU defeated Cowgirl C.C. Sardinha, 6-2, 7-5.
TCU took the lead when Stefanie Tan took the victory over Oklahoma State's Malika Rose on court one after winning the second and third sets.
The Horned Frog advantage was short-lived, however. The Cowgirls rattled off three straight wins on courts six, two and five, respectively, to clinch the match. Karyn Guttormsen defeated Millie Nichols on six, 6-3, 2-6, 6-3, in the sixth spot to tie the match at two. Meghan Blevins followed her impressive performance against Oklahoma with another exciting victory on Friday, defeating TCU's Olivia Smith, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.
After losing a tough tiebreaker in the first set, freshman Maria Alvarez stormed back to win her second and third sets to notch a 6-7(6), 6-1, 6-3 win over Federica Denti on five, and seal the match for the Cowgirls.
“This was a big win for us,” Cowgirl tennis coach Chris Young said. “We lost to this team a couple weeks ago and we had three girls win that lost last time. So to turn around three matches that two weeks ago we were losing was really big. Last time we won the doubles point and came out slow in singles. This time we came out with really good energy and the girls competed all the way through.”
The Cowgirls will take on first-seeded Baylor in the semifinals tomorrow afternoon at 3 p.m.
