STILLWATER - The 2013 NFL Draft starts tonight at 7 p.m. CT and as has become the norm under coach Mike Gundy, Oklahoma State figures to have a presence.
Since Gundy took over the program in 2005, Oklahoma State has averaged about two players selected in then NFL Draft per year, headlined by first-rounders Brandon Pettigrew, Russell Okung, Dez Bryant, Justin Blackmon and Brandon Weeden.
The Cowboys have produced 113 NFL Draft picks all-time, highlighted by 19 first-round picks. The Mike Gundy era has produced 15 NFL Draft picks, led by the five first-rounders mentioned above.
This year's most talked-about NFL Draft prospects from Oklahoma State are running back Joseph Randle and kicker/punter/kickoff man Quinn Sharp.
Randle was a two-time first-team All-Big 12 performer, earning the honor in both 2011 and 2012, and was a key figure in the Cowboys having one of the most feared offenses in America both seasons. With Randle starting at running back, the Cowboys were the only team in the nation to average more than seven yards per play in each of the past two seasons.
A semifinalist for the 2012 Doak Walker Award presented to the nation's top running back, Randle finished his career eighth in OSU history in career rushing yards with 3,085, fourth in career rushing touchdowns (40) and 10th in career scoring with 258 points. That point total is fourth all-time among OSU running backs.
Randle is the latest running back to come from the same Oklahoma State program that produced NFL Hall of Famers Barry Sanders and Thurman Thomas.
NFL Draft analysts from varying media outlets have praised Randle for his dynamic running style and his productivity as a receiver out of the backfield.
Joining Randle in the 2013 NFL Draft discussion from OSU is the only three-time All-American in school history, Sharp. Over his final three seasons, he was named a first-team All-American as a kicker or a punter -- or both. In 2011, he became the first person in the history of the Big 12 to be named all-conference as a punter and kicker, then he repeated that feat in 2012.
As a kickoff specialist, Sharp led the nation in touchbacks on kickoffs each of his four seasons in a Cowboy uniform. As a punter, his punting averages over the last three seasons are the top three in OSU history. As a kicker, he ended his career with 301 points to rank fourth all-time at OSU. Sharp' career punting average of 45.9 yards led all active NCAA players and set an OSU record. His career field-goal percentage of 84.7 was second among all active NCAA players.
Sharp's immediate predecessor at Oklahoma State, Dan Bailey, has been among the most accurate and clutch kickers in the NFL for the last two seasons and made an immediate impact for the Dallas Cowboys after entering the league as an undrafted free agent in 2010.
