STILLWATER - The Oklahoma State football team held an approximately 75-play scrimmage inside Boone Pickens Stadium Friday. Coach Mike Gundy's comments on the action:
On his first reaction to the scrimmage:
"We were competitive in all areas. It was a good day. We stayed healthy. Guys worked at it and execution was good. We've got a long ways to go, but we're getting there."
On if either side of the ball controlled the scrimmage:
"It was balanced - the offense made some plays and the defense made some plays. For the most part, it was a good scrimmage. We had a few penalties, but overall it was pretty clean."
On what his primary goals were for the scrimmage and if the team met those goals:
"It was attitude and effort. Missed assignments and limiting mistakes are important. I thought that we accomplished that. We've got another week to go here, but we're certainly much better now than we were in the middle of March."
On the team's progression this spring and if he's satisfied with it:
"We're about where we need to be. You find out a lot more when you get into August and you have your freshmen in here and give you a little more depth at certain positions. Once we get those guys here, we'll have a better assessment of where we are as a football team, but their attitude is really good."
On if the team's chemistry is good:
"I think so, but again, you find more of that out once you get into the season and play on the road and get into a tough situation and the players have to find a way to overcome it as a group."
On the development of the new coaches:
"I don't know that's changed much. Our concept and our approach has always been the same. The coaches are getting adjusted to the players and the players are getting used to them and our philosophy on both sides of the ball. We really don't change much. We're going to be the same group that we were. We have some new faces, but our concepts will be the same."
On if any of the players have stepped up into leadership roles:
"It's the same as it has been. I don't know that that's really changed. We have a strong core of returning players that have experienced playing in the games. Those guys will have to lead us in the fall."
