STILLWATER, Okla. - The Oklahoma State football team practiced for about two hours in ideal conditions Friday dressed in full pads on the grass practice fields adjacent to Boone Pickens Stadium. Just before practice, new offensive coordinator Mike Yurcich gave some insight into what he looks for both on and off the field from his quarterbacks and also the importance of playing an up-tempo brand of football, among other topics:
On what would constitute a successful spring:
"Improvement, with major emphasis on our tempo, our speed and our ball security."
On if the offense has taken steps since the first day of practice in those areas:
"I think so. I think the effort has been there. The attitude has been very good by our players and looking at each practice, we're getting to where we need to be."
On what he thinks are the most important traits a QB should have away from the field:
"First of all, student-wise, you'd like his grades to be superior. That's very important, for him to be academically secure. The other thing is being a good community guy, somebody that's looking out for the community and doing whatever they can to help out. Those things are important. Just being a nice person. I think those things are key. If he does that, then that's all we can expect."
On how important it is to play at a fast pace:
"It's what we do. It helps set things up. The way we condition, going back to what Coach Glass does, it's who we are. It lets our best abilities come through when we wear people out late in games. That's what comes through in watching tape."
On the chemistry of the players on Oklahoma State's offense:
"They respect one another and they're out to play for the guy next to them. You can feel that. The unselfishness is the one thing that really stood out."
