Wrestling Gets Four Champions at Bob Smith Open

HAYS, Kan.— Oklahoma State wrestling sent 10 wrestlers representing six weight classes to the Bob Smith Open this weekend, hosted by Fort Hays State University. The tournament was highlighted by four Cowboy champions in Eli Hale (125), Dean Heil (141), Nolan Boyd (184), and Austin Schafer (197).
Hale, a freshman, secured his first tournament win of the season, taking out his first two opponents by fall and only giving up a total of six points in the semifinal and final bouts.
Heil went up a weight class for this weekend, wrestling at 141 pounds. He finished the tourney with two technical falls and three decisions en route to winning his second title of the semester.
Boyd eased his way through the tournament with all five of his wins resulting in bonus points, three major decisions, one technical fall and one fall. It was the second tournament win for Boyd.
Schafer improved to 11-0 on the season, winning his third tournament and collecting bonus points in every bout in the form of two major decisions, a technical fall and a fall.
Davey Dolan (149) and Darnell Bortz (197) made it to the finals in their respective brackets but were defeated by their fellow Cowboys.
Ethan Driver had a third-place finish at 285 pounds.
Also competing were Connor Cline (125), Michael Martin (141) and Sam Mehan (165).
