RENO, Nev. – The Oklahoma State wrestling team sent nine wrestlers to the Reno Tournament of Champions Sunday, with Austin Schafer's second-place finish in the 197-pound bracket highlighting the day.
The sophomore from Edmond stormed through his first two bouts with a second-period fall and a 12-0 major decision. He kept pace through the next two bouts with a 10-5 decision and a 2-1 decision to earn his spot in the final, where he fell in a 9-1 decision.
The next best Cowboy finishes on the day came from freshmen Kyle Crutchmer and Nolan Boyd, who placed third in the 174-pound and 184-pound brackets, respectively. Both wrestlers fell in the semifinal round of their brackets before winning a pair of bouts for the third-place finish.
Freshman Jordan Rogers was the only other Oklahoma State athlete to place at the event, finishing fourth at 184 pounds.
Other Cowboys in action included Eli Hale at 125 pounds, Brian Crutchmer at 133 pounds, Quinten Patterson at 174 pounds and Darnell Bortz at 197 pounds.
Oklahoma State wrestling is scheduled to be back in action on New Year's Day for the Southern Scuffle in Chattanooga, Tenn.
