NORMAN, Okla. -- The No. 3 Oklahoma State wrestling team suffered its first loss of the season in a heartbreaking 16-15 loss to the No. 5 Sooners.
“It was definitely not the match we needed,” Smith said. “We need to find a little more guts in the tough scenarios. We will do better.”
The two teams split the matches 5-5, but it was a major decision at 197 pounds that gave the Sooners the advantage.
The Sooners won the first bout at 125 pounds, but the Cowboys answered with five straight wins, starting with an 8-2 decision from No. 3 Jon Morrison over No. 4 Cody Brewer.
Making his varsity debut for the Pokes, true freshman Anthony Collica pulled out a win over All-American Nick Lester, defeating him in a tightly contested 8-7 match.
No. 9 Josh Kindig pulled off a huge 4-3 upset over national champion and second-ranked Kendric Maple.
No. 2 Alex Dieringer followed with an 11-5 win over No. 17 Justin DeAngelis, and No. 2 Tyler Caldwell earned a 10-4 decision over Clark Glass. Unfortunately, that was the final win for the Pokes as the Sooners stormed back to take the final four matches.
The Cowboys will be back in action on Dec. 8 in Stillwater, Okla., to battle it out with No. 2 Minnesota.
