There will be no lack of familiarity between Oklahoma State and TCU when the two teams tangle in Boone Pickens Stadium Saturday, be it with coaches or players. The two programs have recruited against one another for years and both have enjoyed recent success.
Oklahoma State receivers coach Kasey Dunn served as cornerbacks coach under Horned Frog coach Gary Patterson at TCU in 2003. That season, the Horned Frogs finished 11-2 and completed the season with rankings of 24 in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll and 25 in the AP Poll. The defense accounted for 18 interceptions and ranked 19th overall among FBS teams in the category.
TCU receivers coach Curtis Luper played at Oklahoma State from 1984-87 as a running back behind Cowboy greats Thurman Thomas and Barry Sanders and was a teammate of Mike Gundy. In 2005, Luper was a member of Gundy's staff as the running backs coach. He coached Dantrell Savage, Kendall Hunter and Keith Toston, among others during his time in Stillwater.
TCU safeties coach Chad Glasgow donned the Orange and Black from 1991-95 as a three-year letterwinner at linebacker and then spent two years as a graduate assistant under Bob Simmons. Glasgow earned a bachelor's degree from OSU in business administration and has been with TCU for 12 years with a stop at Texas Tech in 2011 mixed in. From 2008-10, the Frogs led the nation in total defense and Glasgow was recognized as a 2010 National Defensive Backs Coach of the Year by FootballScoop.com.
The connections don't end there, as several players from both teams played alongside each other in high school and junior college.
OSU kicker Ben Grogan, TCU defensive end Devonte Fields and kicker Jaden Oberkrom played together at Arlington Martin High School in Arlington, Texas. In 2010 and 2011, the Warriors went a combined 22-5 overall, were district champs both years and had a deep run into the 5A Division 1 playoffs.
Cowboy defensive tackle Eric Davis and Horned Frog safety Chris Hackett attended John Tyler High School in Tyler, Texas. In 2010, the Lions went 12-2 overall, 7-0 in district to win their district and lost in the quarterfinals of the 4A Division 1 playoffs.
OSU cornerback Taylor Lewis and TCU receivers David Porter and Cam White attended DeSoto High School in DeSoto, Texas. In 2009 and 2010, the Eagles were a combined 20-6 overall and lost in the second and quarterfinal rounds, respectively, in the 5A Division 1 playoffs.
Cowboy offensive lineman Michael Wilson and Horned Frog defensive end Jon Koontz both attended Aledo High School in Aledo, Texas. Wilson was the lead figure in paving the way for Aledo running back Johnathan Gray to earn the distinction of being the nation's top prep running back and 2012 Gatorade National Player of the Year.
OSU offensive lineman Brandon Garrett, TCU cornerback Keivon Gamble and linebacker Paul Dawson played together at Trinity Valley Community College. In 2011, the Cardinals went 8-1 in the regular season and 5-1 in the Southwest Junior College Football Conference. Their final national ranking was 11th in the NJCAA poll and they appeared in their first bowl in six years.
Horned Frog offensive lineman Patrick Morris played for OSU quarterback J.W. Walsh's father, John Walsh, at Denton Guyer High School in Denton, Texas. In 2012, the Wildcats were 15-2 overall and won the 4A Division 1 State Championship at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
The Cowboys take on the Horned Frogs Saturday at 11 a.m. on Fox to cap off "America's Greatest Homecoming Celebration."
