OKLAHOMA CITY - Two men with Oklahoma State ties will be among six new members inducted into the Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame this week. Former Cowboy head football coach Pat Jones and the late Jesse "Cab" Renick, a former basketball standout, will be honored on Monday in Oklahoma City.
The all-time winningest coach in OSU history, Jones led the Cowboy program from 1984-1994. During his tenure, OSU posted three bowl wins, emerging victorious at the 1984 Gator Bowl, the 1987 Sun Bowl and the 1988 Holiday Bowl. A two-time Big Eight Coach of the Year, Jones also spent 10 years in the NFL.
Individually, Jones coached nine All-Americans, the 1988 Heisman Trophy Winner (Barry Sanders) as well as the Big Eight's all-time leading passer (Mike Gundy), receiver (Hart Lee Dykes) and rusher (Thurman Thomas).
A native of Marietta, Okla., Renick became the first Cowboy to receive All-America honors twice, earning the distinction in 1939 and 1940. Renick was the leading scorer on legendary coach Henry Iba's 1938-39 squad, scoring 179 points in 27 games. He finished his career at Oklahoma A&M with 403 points over 56 games.
Renick competed at the 1948 Olympic Games in London and became just the second Native American, after Jim Thorpe, to win an Olympic Gold Medal.
The 26th Annual Induction Ceremony will be held at the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum. Joining Jones and Renick in the Class of 2012 are Lynne Draper, Ferguson Jenkins, Perry Maxwell and Dewey Selmon.
