STILLWATER, Okla. - The Oklahoma State football team put on shoulder pads for the first time when it practiced under cloudy and warm conditions Sunday on the grass fields adjacent to Gallagher-Iba Arena. After practice, offensive coordinator Todd Monken talked about Wes Lunt and the Cowboy quarterbacks:
On what he saw Sunday and how he felt about it:
"It was the third day of install, so what you're really starting to see is our young guys - our skill guys -playing better. They're starting to get it a little bit. They're making a few more plays, which is encouraging. All of our quarterbacks are playing well. When we have trouble is when our younger quarterbacks make mistakes and it just compounds. It's not out of talent, it's out of the process and then the mistakes."
On Wes Lunt and his development:
"He's done real well. There's been a setback of learning because we don't get to coach him in the summer. Every now and then he comes in and wants to watch film, but it's not the same as really dissecting it. He's sped back up and he's back to where he was and the good news is that he still doesn't really know what he's doing. The good news is that he's doing great and he really still doesn't know what he's doing. With all of them, when they really grasp what we're doing, we're going to be pretty good."
On Lunt's decision making:
"His decision-making and his accuracy have been fine. He hasn't turned it over. The reality is where to go with the ball - what the defense is doing and where do I go with the ball and then throw it accurately. The accuracy part is going to be fine. It's just what are they doing and with our concepts, where do we go with the ball and where are their stress points and where do I go with it."
On his comfort level with J.W. Walsh at quarterback:
"It's good. He's gotten a lot better. He's throwing it a lot better. He's done this longer than Wes, but not a lot longer. He's a lot more comfortable. We haven't gotten to where we can see his athleticism, but he's doing just fine."
On what he's looking to accomplish during the next week of practice:
"We want to get to where we stack plays together that look like we know what the heck we're doing. You can't have a good play and then have a mistake that causes you to have a turnover or a lost yardage play or a penalty. It's how many quality plays in a row can we stack together where it looks like we know what we're doing.
