BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Oklahoma State was dominant in its first road test of the season Friday night, picking up a 4-2 win over UAB at West Campus Field.
Four different OSU players scored, two for the first time this season, and the third-ranked Cowgirls erased a 1-0 deficit for the second-straight match as they improved to 5-0-0.
"You know there's never going to be an easy game any time you travel," said OSU head coach Colin Carmichael. "We started really badly the first 10 minutes; (UAB) came out with a ton of energy and took it to us. But our kids responded and fought back and played some really good soccer... just pleased to go on the road and win."
Both teams scored in the 12th minute, with UAB taking an early lead when Emma Jane Smith beat her defender and sent a shot past goalie AD Franch.
But the lead was short lived as just 18 seconds later, George Christie delivered a shot that glanced off a UAB defender and into the back of the net. Christie's second goal of the season tied the game at 1-1.
The Cowgirls would take the lead at the 26:39 mark when Kristen Kelley netted her first goal of the season, blasting a shot from 18 yards out that deflected off a defender and past a diving Courtnie Northern for a goal.
OSU took the 2-1 advantage into intermission, and during a seven-minute span midway through the second half, the Cowgirls put the game away with two more goals.
The first of those scores came off a corner kick as Caitlyn Biggers recorded her first collegiate goal off an assist from Megan Marchesano to make the score 3-1.
In the 68th minute, Marchesano got into the scoring act. After being fouled in the box, the senior stepped up and converted a penalty kick to put OSU up by three goals. The goal was Marchesano's team-leading third of the season and 20th of her career, which moved her into a tie for 10th place on the Cowgirls' all-time list.
Carmichael was pleased with the balanced scoring attack from his squad, which has now seen eight different players combine for its 13 goals.
"You don't want to rely on just one player to get the goals for you so anytime you have the scoring spread around like that it makes you really hard to defend - the other team can't key on one," Carmichael said. "It's great to get contributions from so many different kids."
OSU returns to action Sunday when they travel to Memphis to take on the Tigers at 7 p.m.
