Talor Gooch Cruises At U.S. Amateur

CHERRY HILLS VILLAGE, Colo. - Oklahoma State rising junior Talor Gooch rolled to a first-round victory over T.J. Mitchell at the U.S. Amateur Championship on Wednesday at Cherry Hills Country Club to advance to the round of 32.
Behind the strength of six birdies, Gooch never trailed in his 5-and-3 victory over the University of Georgia product. After the Midwest City, Okla., native won the first with a par, Mitchell squared the match at the third with a par of his own.
Gooch reclaimed the lead at the fifth with a birdie and proceeded to birdie the next three to take a commanding 4-up lead through eight holes. Mitchell won the 11th, but Gooch answered with a birdie at the 12th and closed out the match with another birdie at the 15th.
Gooch, who tied for 13th during stroke play with rounds of 68 and 71, will be back in action tomorrow morning against Andrew Presley in the second round.
