STILLWATER, Okla. - Oklahoma State's Quinn Sharp is on the preseason watch list for the Lou Groza Award presented to the nation's top kicker, it was announced today. A first-team All-American and the Big 12 Special Teams Player of the Year in 2011, Sharp is a very strong candidate to be OSU's second Groza Award winner in three years, as Dan Bailey earned the honor in 2010.
Perhaps the most dominant specialist in the country, Sharp has earned first-team All-America honors as both a kicker and a punter and he has led the nation in touchbacks on kickoffs each of the past three seasons. He is only the third player ever to earn first-team All-America honors by the Football Writers Association of America at two different positions, joining USC running back/return man Reggie Bush and Utah kicker/punter Louie Sakoda.
Sharp was a semifinalist for the Groza Award last year after leading the nation with a staggering 61 touchbacks on kickoffs (23 more than the second-place finisher) and leading all kickers nationally by scoring 11.5 points per game. His .880 percentage on field goals ranked seventh nationally.
