STILLWATER, Okla. – The final USTFCCCA poll of the 2012 season was released Tuesday, with the Oklahoma State men's track and field team closing the year ranked No. 32 and the women's team ranked No. 36.
Over the weekend, the Cowboys had four individuals advance to compete at the NCAA Outdoor Championships after impressive performances at the NCAA West Preliminary rounds. Girma Mecheso will compete in the 5,000 meters and the 10,000 meters. He is the only OSU athlete who will compete in two events.
Also competing for the Cowboys will be German Fernandez in the 1,500 meters, Fabian Clarkson in the 3,000 meter steeplechase and Nick Miller in the hammer throw.
Miller won the Big 12 title in the hammer throw at the conference meet earlier in the month. As a team, the Cowboys finished tied for seventh, which is the highest they have finished at the outdoor conference meet since 1994. The 64 team points they racked up is the highest total since the 1986 Big Eight Championships.
For the women, three advanced to compete at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. Natalja Piliusina will compete in the 1,500 meters, Kate Kujawa will run the 3,000 meter steeplechase and Toni Young will compete in the high jump.
Piliusina is coming off of a Big 12 title in the 800 meters, and she owns the top 1,500 meter time in the NCAA this season. Young is tied for fourth nationally in the high jump, and she and Kujawa each finished runner up at the conference meet.
The Cowboys and Cowgirls will carry their final rankings into the NCAA Outdoor Championships, which take place June 6-9 in Des Moines, Iowa.
