STILLWATER, Okla.- Oklahoma State wrestlers Alex Dieringer and Austin Marsden earned spots on the United States junior freestyle world team Saturday in Colorado Springs, Colo.
The two will compete at the FILA Junior World Championships on Sept. 4-9 in Pattaya, Thailand.
Dieringer toppled Iowa's Nick Moore, 2-0 in a best-of-three championship series Saturday to earn the roster spot at 74kg/163 pounds. Dieringer won the first match, 3-2, 1-0 and took the second by a comfortable 5-1, 1-0 margin.
Marsden was a 2-0 winner in the best-of-three championship series at 120kg/264.5 pounds, pitching a 4-0, 2-0 shutout in his first match with Wisconsin's Connor Medbery, then finishing Medbery with a 3-0, 2-0 win in the second of their two matches.
In earning their spots on the U.S. junior world team, Dieringer and Marsden join teammates Josh Kindig, Jordan Oliver and Chris Perry as wrestlers on the current Oklahoma State roster to represent Team USA at the junior freestyle world championships.
Dieringer spent the 2011-12 college season redshirting, but did compile a 17-1 record in open tournaments with seven wins coming by fall. Marsden was ticketed to redshirt, but was forced into the OSU lineup late in the season when Alan Gelogaev suffered a season-ending injury. Marsden finished the season 26-3.
