PALO ALTO, Calif. – The Oklahoma State track and field program had a number of impressive performances on Sunday at the Payton Jordan Invitational, hosted by Stanford University.
For the men, Girma Mecheso set the school record in the 10,000 meters after running a 28:16.97 to place 12th. His time surpasses the previous record held by Colby Lowe by nearly 29 seconds.
Junior Tom Farrell ran unattached in section one of the 5,000 meters, clocking a 13:15.31 to place fifth. He recorded the fastest time among collegiate runners and his time is at the top in the NCAA this season. Farrell's time of 13:15.31 set an Olympic "A" Standard, qualifying him to compete in the Olympics for his native Great Britain if his time remains as one of the top three in his country.
Kirubel Erassa placed ninth in the second section of the 5,000 meters after running a 13:47.26, which is 10th all-time at OSU. Shane Moskowitz placed first in section five of the 1,500-meter run after clocking a 3:44.31, which stands 10th on the all-time list at OSU.
In the top section of the 1,500 meters, sophomore Natalja Piliusina ran a 4:09.51 to place fifth. Piliusina was the only collegiate runner in section one. Piliusina's time of 4:09.51 in the 1,500 meters set the OSU record, beating the previous record held by Mihaela Susa by nearly four seconds. Her time also stands as the top time in the NCAA.
Toni Young had another impressive performance in just her second outing as a member of the track team with a second place finish in the high jump. Her 1.84-meter effort set the new school record at OSU, breaking the previous record of 1.81 meters set by Michelle Crowson in 1987.
Sophomore Cowgirls Kate Kujawa and Caileigh Glenn had solid showings in section five of the 1,500 hundred meters, finishing first and second respectively. Kujawa's time of 4:22.60 is good for sixth all-time at OSU, while Glenn's time of 4:22.77 is seventh in the record book.
OSU will return to the track next weekend when it travels to Fayetteville, Ark., for the Arkansas Twilight meet on May 4.
