HUMBLE, Texas - Former Oklahoma State All-American Hunter Mahan logged his second PGA Tour victory of the year on Sunday with his triumph at the Shell Houston Open.
Mahan fired a 1-under 71 to finish one shot clear of Carl Pettersson and become the first two-time champion on Tour this year. The victory also moved Mahan into the top spot in the FedExCup standings and elevated him to No. 4 in the world rankings. With his new ranking, he is now the highest-ranked American for the first time in his career.
Mahan began the day two shots off the pace of Louis Oosthuizen, but quickly made up ground on the front nine with eight-straight pars and a birdie at the ninth. He took sole possession of the lead on the 10th and wrapped up the victory with a 16-under total of 272.
With his fifth career victory, Mahan pocketed $1,080,000 and 500 FedExCup points. He has tallied 1,314 points in seven starts to hold a 258-point lead over Johnson Wagner. Mahan also sits atop the Tour's money list with $2,937,240.
In February, he won the World Golf Championships--Accenture Match Play Championship.
