RICHMOND, Va. – Oklahoma State's Chase Stevens has been named the National Pitcher of the Week by CollegeBaseballInsider.com for his performances in a pair of games last week.
Stevens, a right-handed pitcher who earlier this week was named the Big 12 Conference Newcomer of the Week, was dominant on the mound in going 2-0 last week for the Cowboys. In 12 innings of work, he racked up 23 strikeouts and did not allow an earned run. He surrendered only two hits, and opponents hit just .053 against him.
A JUCO transfer from Seminole State, Stevens earned the first win of his OSU career in his first-ever start for the Cowboys, which came Tuesday against Dallas Baptist. In seven innings of work, he recorded 10 strikeouts and gave up just two hits and one run, which was unearned.
The Blanchard, Okla. native was even more impressive in a relief outing Saturday against Bowling Green State. Stevens entered the game in the fifth inning, and, after getting a fly out and issuing a walk, he struck out 10 consecutive Falcons over the next two-plus innings. He finished with 13 strikeouts, the most by a Big 12 pitcher in a game this season, and did not allow a hit or run.
Stevens leads the Big 12 in strikeouts with 25 and is second with 14.2 innings pitched. He also ranks among the league leaders in wins (2), opponent batting average (.085) and ERA (0.61).
