STILLWATER, Okla. - The Oklahoma State football team started its eighth spring practice session under head coach Mike Gundy on Monday. Dressed in shorts and no pads, the Cowboys drilled for about two hours in sunny and warm conditions on the Boone Pickens Stadium turf. Following practice, Gundy shared some insight on what he saw from the team.
On his overall view of practice:
"We were good - not great. Our attitude was good. Our body language was good. Our tempo was better than I thought it would be. I was watching the quarterbacks and those guys did some good things, then at times they were lost. Our incoming players - Blake Jackson - did a nice job. I thought Calvin Barnett ran to the ball really well. Our veteran guys like Joseph Randle, Jeremy Smith, Justin Gilbert and Caleb Lavey all seemed to be starting right from where they left off from the bowl game."
On what his goals were for the practice session and if the team met those goals:
"Our goal was to have a quick practice with a lot of tempo, a lot of excitement and a lot of enthusiasm and I think we did accomplish that."
On if any players who have not yet played much in games caught his eye:
"Torrance Carr made some plays. Daniel Koenig did a nice job. Shamiel Gary, who is a transfer, showed up and made a few plays. Those are some guys that I noticed that didn't play a lot last year who looked like they had a nice first day."
On what he wants to accomplish for the rest of the week:
"We want to get a good practice in Wednesday before we get into the pads Thursday. We have to get some of the players that haven't played as much on gameday in the right frame of mind and understand the importance of missed assignments and taking care of the football and/or forcing turnovers. It's really all about the attitude and team chemistry and body language and guys trying to help each other."
