Postgame Notes
Oklahoma State vs Kansas
Saturday, Oct. 13, 2012
There was a 79-minute delay at the 44-second mark of the first quarter due to lightning in the area.
Oklahoma State entered the game with an NCAA-record-tying streak of 22 consecutive games with 30 or more points scored. The Cowboys scored 20 points against the Jayhawks.
Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy entered the game with 61 career wins – one shy of Pat Jones for most victories for a Cowboy coach. Jones was 62-60 in his OSU career from 1984-94. Gundy is now tied with his mentor.
Oklahoma State now holds a 32-29-2 all-time series advantage over Kansas, including an 8-1 mark in the Big 12 era.
The Cowboys are now 14-3 in their last 17 road games and have won 13 of ther last 15 conference road games.
Oklahoma State entered the game leading the nation in both scoring (55.8 points per game) and total offense (659.0 yards per game). The Cowboys finished Saturday with 20 points and 371 yards.
For the third time in five games this year, the Oklahoma State defense pitched a first-half shutout.
Oklahoma State was held scoreless in the first quarter Saturday. It was the first time since the 2012 Fiesta Bowl game that the Cowboys were held scoreless in the first quarter of a game.
When Joseph Randle was stopped on a fourth-and-one midway through the first quarter, it marked the first time this season that Oklahoma State didn't score once entering the red zone. The Cowboys were a perfect 25-for-25 entering the contest.
Oklahoma State's game captains were running back Joseph Randle (offense), linebacker Caleb Lavey and safety Daytawion Lowe (defense), and linebacker Nico Ornelas (special teams).
Running back Joseph Randle – a native of Wichita, Kansas – carried the ball 29 times for 80 yards playing in his home state. Randle's brother, John, played for the Jayhawks from 2003-04.
Freshman receiver Austin Hays made his first career start to become the 15th Cowboy to make his first-career start this year. He is the fifth OSU freshman to start this season, joining fellow true freshman Wes Lunt and redshirt freshmen J.W. Walsh, DeMarcus Sherod and Jeremy Seaton.
The 72-yard J.W.Walsh-to-Charlie Moore touchdown pass in the third quarter was OSU's longest play from scrimmage this year and the longest since an 80-yard Brandon Weeden-to-Justin Blackmon touchdown against Nebraska in 2010.
