Oklahoma State Postgame Notes vs. Arizona
Boone Pickens Stadium – Stillwater, Okla. – Sept. 8, 2011
— Senior Brandon Weeden broke the single-game school record for pass completions (42) and pass attempts (53). He broke his own school record of 34 completions set against Baylor in 2010, and he surpassed the previous record of 50 completions held by both Zac Robinson (vs. Oregon in 2008) and Tony Pounds (vs. Kansas State in 1970). He completed his first 13 passes to open the game, and his first incompletion didn't come until there was 1:12 remaining in the first quarter.
— Weeden recorded the ninth 300-yard passing game of his career, extending his school record. His 397 passing yards were the seventh-highest single-game total in OSU history.
— Weeden now has 5,309 passing yards in his career, becoming just the fourth Cowboy quarterback to pass for more than 5,000 yards.
— Junior Justin Blackmon recorded the 14th 100-yard receiving game of his career with his 12-catch, 128-yard performance. He also has now caught a pass of at least 29 yards in 15 straight games.
— Sophomore Joseph Randle recorded his second consecutive 100-yard rushing game with his 15-carry, 121-yard performance (following last week's career-best 129-yard effort). He also established a career best with nine pass catches for 99 yards.
— Sophomore Jeremy Smith's 6-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter marks the sixth-consecutive game that the Cowboy tailback has rushed for a score.
— Junior Kye Staley had the first pass reception of his career (a 5-yard catch in the first quarter) and the first rushing attempt of his career (a 4-yard gain in the second period) in tonight's game.
— Senior Josh Cooper had six catches for 58 yards to extend his streak of games with at least one catch to 19.
— The Cowboys have scored at least one touchdown in all eight quarters this season.
—Sophomore Daytawion Lowe had a career-high seven tackles while making the second start of his career.
— Junior Nigel Nicholas has recorded sacks in both of the Cowboys' first two games.
— Senior Markelle Martin started his 26th consecutive game, the longest among current Cowboys.
— Thursday night's attendance of 54,654 was the sixth-largest crowd in OSU history.
— OSU's team captains for tonight's game were receiver Josh Cooper, defensive end Jamie Blatnick and kicker/punter Quinn Sharp.
— Arizona won the coin toss and deferred to the second half. Oklahoma State received the kickoff to begin the game.
— The nine-play, 88-yard scoring drive to open the game was the longest scoring drive of the season for the Cowboys.
— Senior Wilson Youman played both offense and defense for the second game in a row. He lined up at tight end, catching a pass on the game's very first play, and also played defensive end.
— For the second game this season, the Cowboys scored a touchdown on the first possession of the game and then forced their opponent to punt on its first possession.
— The Cowboys finished the Alamo Bowl with 312 total yards on 61 plays in the 36-10 victory over Arizona last December. They nearly surpassed that total in the first half tonight, accumulating 307 yards on 47 plays, and then did surpass it on their first possession of the second half.
— OSU has opened the season 2-0 for the fifth time in the last six years. Since the Jimmy Johnson years (which began in 1979), the Cowboys have started a season 2-0 on 14 occasions. In 10 of those 14 years, they have qualified for a bowl game.
— The Cowboys are now 10-10 all-time against the old Pac-10. They have now won six of their last seven games against current Pac-12 members, and they are 6-1 vs. the league under Mike Gundy.
— Gundy's record as head coach of the Cowboys is now 49-29, leaving him just one victory shy of becoming the third coach in OSU history to reach 50 victories. The Cowboys are 31-11 (75.6 winning percentage) over the last 41 games under Gundy, and have won 22 of their last 28 games (78.6 percent).
