OMAHA, Neb. – Oklahoma State remained perfect on the season, and head coach Colin Carmichael recorded his 100th-career win as the No. 5 Cowgirls knocked off Creighton, 1-0, in a weather-shortened match Friday night at Morrison Stadium.
Megan Marchesano's goal in the 64th minute was the lone score in the match as OSU improved to 6-0-0. The match ended with 3:40 remaining after heavy rain and lightning moved into the area.
Carmichael, who has been at OSU throughout the program's 16-year history and is in his seventh season at the helm, is now 100-27-17 in his career.
“Any time you go on road and win, you're happy,” Carmichael said. “It was a difficult game against a tough opponent. In the first half, we were sub-par, not nearly as sharp as we needed to be. We were much better in the second half when we settled down and created better looks at the goal.
“(Getting 100 wins is a) nice milestone. I've been coaching for quite a few years, and it's just a sign of the direction the program has been going. We've had a lot of great players, and that's the biggest reason any coach has success. It's a nice achievement, but now we're just looking to Sunday.”
In the opening half, OSU outshot the Bluejays by just one. The Cowgirls' closest scoring attempt came on a shot by Taylor Mathews that sailed just over the crossbar at the 23:33 mark.
The second half would see a much more aggressive attack from the Cowgirls, who were sparked by the return of senior Annika Niemeier from an injury that caused her to miss the previous three games.
And the Cowgirls finally converted a scoring attack in the 64th minute. Abbey Akin sent a pass ahead to Colleen Dougherty on the end line, who flicked a pass to Marchesano inside the box. Marchesano's shot got past Creighton goalie Alicia Montgomery for what proved to be the game-winning score. The goal was the second of the season for Marchesano.
That was all OSU would need as the Cowgirls recorded their fifth shutout of the season and the third by freshman goalie Rosa Medina.
The closest Creighton (2-1-0) would come to scoring came with just over five minutes remaining when an 18-yard shot from Lauren Cingoranelli deflected off the top of the crossbar.
OSU returns to action Sunday when the Cowgirls host Arkansas-Little Rock at 1 p.m. in Stillwater.
