STILLWATER, Okla. – Oklahoma State set a school record Sunday with its 11th-straight win to start a season as the No. 2 Cowgirls knocked off Utah State, 3-0, at the Cowgirl Soccer Complex.
Krista Lopez recorded two goals and an assist, and OSU notched its eighth shutout of the season to improve to 11-0-0. The Cowgirls had previously started the 2002 and 2003 seasons 10-0-0.
“It's pretty exciting; we talked a little bit before the game about motivation and that was one of the things we talked about, just continuing to set records and set new standards,” said OSU head coach Colin Carmichael, whose squad opens Big 12 Conference play next week. “To go 11-0 in the non-conference, given that we've played some pretty good teams, is a good achievement.”
OSU put the game away early thanks to Lopez as the Cowgirl senior forward scored two goals in the first 3:55 of the match.
Lopez's first goal came at the 3:20 mark as she took a pass from Kristen Kelley and delivered a six-yard shot past USU goalie Molli Merrill.
Just 35 seconds later, Lopez recorded her second score when she blocked the ball from a defender trying to clear it, and the ball ricocheted into the back of net.
OSU added its third goal in the 59th minute when Elizabeth DeLozier delivered her third goal in the last three games off an assist from Lopez. The three goals is a career high for DeLozier, a senior midfielder.
“It's a good feeling; I'm not one usually to get on the scoreboard,” DeLozier said. “It's fun. Helping out our team and putting some goals away gives everyone a sense of confidence that you're stepping up. It feels good to be able to be a part of that.”
OSU returns to action Friday when the Cowgirls host Kansas.
