GLENVIEW, Ill. - Oklahoma State's Peter Uihlein posted a 71 during the fourth round of stroke play on Thursday at the 109th Western Amateur Championship to advance to match play at North Shore Country Club.
After 36 holes of stroke play, the field was cut to the low 44 players and ties for Thursday's 36-hole day to determine the final 16 competitors. Uihlein fired a 3-under 68 during the morning's round, which included three birdies and an eagle at the par-5 15th to move well within the cutline.
The Orlando, Fla., native used an even-par 71 during his final round to secure his spot in the match play portion of the event. Uihlein stood at 2-over par during his afternoon round after carding bogeys at the fifth and seventh. With a birdie at the eighth, he made the turn at 1-over 36. Uihlein moved back to level par with a birdie at No. 11 before giving a shot back with a bogey at the 12th. He got the shot back and finished at even par with a birdie at the closing par-4 18th.
The 20111 Ben Hogan Award winner finished in a tie for seventh with a 5-under 279 total. Chris Williams claimed medalist honors with a 268 tally.
Uihlein will be the No. 8 seed and will take on ninth-seeded Gregor Main of UCLA tomorrow morning.
