ERIN, Wis. - Oklahoma State's Peter Uihlein saw his run at the 2011 U.S. Amateur Championship come to an end on Friday afternoon after losing, 2 and 1, in the quarterfinal round to Jordan Russell at Erin Hills.
The loss ended the OSU senior's string of nine consecutive match play victories at the event. Uihlein's streak dated back to last year's run to the final match en route to becoming the school's fourth Amateur champion.
The two players halved the first three holes of the match before Russell, who never trailed in the match, took the fourth with a birdie. He then took a 2-up advantage with a par at the sixth. Uihlein won his first hole of the match at the ninth to trail by one at the turn and squared the match at the 12th. However, Russell took control of the match with wins at the next two holes before the duo halved the next three holes to close the match.
Earlier in the day, Uihlein advanced to the quarterfinals with a 2 and 1 win over Illinois product Scott Langley.
The victory over Langley marked the third-straight time the 2011 Ben Hogan Award winner has reached the tournament's quarterfinal round, making him the first player since Tiger Woods to accomplish the feat. Woods did it from 1994-96.
