STILLWATER, Okla. - Oklahoma State ran its unbeaten streak against Bedlam-rival Oklahoma to nine as the No. 6 Cowgirls knocked off the Sooners, 1-0, in front of 1,900 fans Friday night at the Cowgirl Soccer Complex.
Sarah Brown's goal in the 79th minute was the lone score in the match, and AD Franch set OSU's career record for shutouts as the Cowgirls improved to 3-0-0 on the season. OSU is now 8-0-1 during its current unbeaten streak against the Sooners and 15-2-2 all time vs. its in-state rival.
For OSU head coach Colin Carmichael, who picked up his 97th career win, the match was a tale of two halves for his squad.
"We knew OU was a good team and they played hard and I thought we played okay in the first half, but we were just a step off, we just didn't seem to be firing," Carmichael said. "In the second half, we talked about upping the intensity, pressing them a little bit harder and also executing in the final third, and I thought we did that.
"Our second half performance was great. I thought we dominated the play and created enough chances to score two or three. So first half, decent, second half, great."
After a first half that saw both teams record six shots, OSU was the aggressor offensively following intermission.
In the first five minutes of the half, the Cowgirls had three prime scoring chances but could not convert. The first came when a header by Kristen Kelley off a corner kick caromed off the crossbar, and over the next 80 seconds, shots by Krista Lopez and Taylor Mathews nearly found the back of the net.
The scoring drought finally came to an end at the 78:26 mark. Kelley made a great run down the end line and sent a pass through the box to Brown, who delivered a shot past OU goalie Kelsey Devonshire.
The goal was just the second of Brown's career and first since her freshman season in 2008.
"We've been working all week in practice on making the right run and making the right pass, and I was just there to place it in the goal," Brown said. "It's been a while since I scored, and it felt really good. Hopefully it's the first of many more to go."
Brown's goal would be all OSU would need as the Cowgirls recorded their second shutout of the season. The shutout marked the 22nd of Franch's career, a total that put her all alone atop the school's career chart.
"It's nice, and it was against OU so that's even better," said Franch, who recorded three saves on 10 OU shots.
The Cowgirls return to action Sunday with their first road test of the season when they take on Arkansas in Fayetteville beginning at 1 p.m.
