ERIN, Wisc. - Oklahoma State's Peter Uihlein knocked off Dylan Frittelli, 5 and 4, during the second round of match play on Thursday at the U.S. Amateur Championship at Erin Hills.
With the win, the defending U.S. Amateur champion moved into the round of 16 and will face Illinois' Scott Langley tomorrow morning.
On Thursday, Frittelli won the opening hole before Uihlein squared the match with a birdie at the second. After Frittelli regained the lead at the third, Uihlein drew even again on the next hole and would not trail again.
The Orlando, Fla., native took his first lead at the par-5 seventh with a birdie and proceeded to win the next four holes to build a commanding 5-up lead through 11 holes. The duo exchanged wins on Nos. 12 and 13 before halving the 14th hole with birdies to bring the match to a close.
After darkness halted play yesterday, fellow Cowboy Kevin Dougherty resumed his opening match against Russell Henley, falling 3 and 1 to the All-American from Georgia on Thursday morning.
Uihlein and Langley, the 2010 NCAA champion, will square off tomorrow at 7:40 a.m. with the rising OSU senior looking to make his third-straight quarterfinal appearance at the event.
