ERIN, Wisc. - Two of Oklahoma State's representatives at the United States Amateur Championship advanced to the match play portion of the event, which got underway on Wednesday at Erin Hills.
Defending champion Peter Uihlein closed out Oregon's Eugene Wong, 3 and 1, during his first-round match to advance to the round of 32. Uihlein never trailed in the match and scratched first with wins at the third and fourth.
Wong won the par-3 ninth with a birdie to get within one before the 2011 Ben Hogan Award winner won three of the next four to build a 4-up advantage with four to play. After Wong took the next two holes, Uihlein's par at the 17th closed out the match.
Uihlein, who entered match play as the No. 8 seed after firing rounds of 68 and 69 the past two days, will face Texas product Dylan Fritelli during his second-round match at 11:20 a.m. tomorrow.
Kevin Dougherty also advanced to the match play tree with scores of 68 and 73. The Murrieta, Calif., native saw his match against Georgia All-American Russell Henley halted for the day after 12 holes with Henley holding a 1-up lead. The duo will resume their match tomorrow morning.
Sean Einhaus also competed in the event, posting rounds of 69 and 77 to tie for 131st place.
