OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – Oklahoma State's Krista Lopez is one of 30 candidates for the 2011 Lowe's Senior CLASS Award for women's soccer, it was announced today.
An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School, the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: classroom, character, community and competition.
A native of Carrollton, Texas, Lopez carries a perfect 4.0 cumulative GPA with a double major in management and accounting. In 2010, she earned first-team Academic All-America honors from both ESPN The Magazine and the NSCAA. She is a two-time Academic All-Big 12 First Team performer and has been named to the Big 12 Honor Roll five times. In 2010, she was an Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar First Team choice and was an NSCAA Scholar All-South Region First Team and ESPN/CoSida Academic All-District 6 First Team selection.
Lopez, a forward for the Cowgirls, is a preseason All-Big 12 selection after a breakout year on the pitch in 2010. As a junior last season, she earned All-Big 12 First Team and NSCAA All-Central Region First Team honors after scoring 15 goals and recording five assists. Her 15 goals ranked second in the Big 12 and ninth nationally, and her seven game-winning goals led the conference. The 15 goals were the second most in a single season in OSU history, and her 35 points was the third highest output ever by a Cowgirl.
Lopez serves the community through work with the Stillwater Humane Society and the Special Olympics, and she is also a volunteer at the Family Resource Center. Last December, she helped with a Christmas party for disadvantaged youth at her church.
This marks the fifth year for the men's and women's soccer division of the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award. OSU has had a candidate on the list in each of the last four years.
The list of 30 women's soccer candidates will be narrowed to 10 finalists midway through the regular season, and those 10 names will then be placed on the official ballot for a nationwide vote involving media, coaches and fans. The winner will be announced at the 2011 Women's College Cup in December.
