NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Walter Camp Football Foundation has announced that the Oklahoma State “throw and catch” combo of quarterback Brandon Weeden and receiver Justin Blackmon are two of the 40 players on the 2011 player of the year preseason watch list.
Blackmon was a Walter Camp All-America selection a year ago while Weeden is the reigning All-Big 12 quarterback. The duo helped OSU to more than 520 yards of offense per game last season and 44.2 points per game.
Blackmon, who won last year's Biletnikoff Award for the best receiver in America as well as the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year award, was a unanimous All-America honoree in 2010. He was the NCAA leader with 148.5 receiving yards per game and set NCAA records for most receiving yards by a sophomore (1,782) and most consecutive games with at least 100 receiving yards and a touchdown catch (12).
Weeden is ranked among the top four active NCAA quarterbacks for career passing efficiency and is the reigning first-team All-Big 12 quarterback. In 2010, he set single season school records for passing yards, total offense, touchdown passes, completed passes, pass attempts and completion percentage. He also owns OSU single-game records for completions (34) and passing yards (435) and enters the 2011 season with an 11-2 record as a starter.
The player of the year watch will be narrowed to 10 semi-finalists in mid-November. The 2011 Walter Camp Player of the Year recipient, which is voted on by the 120 NCAA Bowl Subdivision head coaches and sports information directors, will be announced live on ESPN SportsCenter on Thursday, Dec. 8. The winner will then receive his trophy at the Foundation's annual national awards banquet on Jan. 14, 2012, at the Yale University Commons in New Haven.
