SANDWICH, England - Former Oklahoma State golf standout Rickie Fowler fired an impressive 68 during the third round of play at The Open Championship at Royal St. George's on Saturday to move into contention heading into the final day.
Battling adverse conditions, Fowler's 2-under day moved him from a tie for 19th place into a tie for third place with a 54-hole total of 2-under 208. He will begin tomorrow's final round tied with Thomas Bjorn. The duo stands two shots behind Dustin Johnson for second place and three shots off the pace of tournament leader Darren Clarke.
During his third round, Fowler bogeyed his second hole before getting back to even with a birdie at the fifth en route to making the turn at even-par 35. After a bogey at the 11th, Fowler birdied three of the next five holes to get to his 2-under total. His 68 matched Johnson for the low round of the day and with Clarke's 69 was one of just three rounds in the 60s on Saturday.
Fowler was one of four Cowboys to make the cut at the year's third major.
Charles Howell III wrapped up the day tied for 25th place at 214 after posting a 73 during his third round, while Bo Van Pelt's 73 tied him for 33rd place at 215.
Current Cowboy Peter Uihlein's 75 knotted him for 41st place at 217. The rising senior will begin his final round two shots back in the race for low amateur honors.
