STILLWATER, Okla. (OSU Athletics) -- Oklahoma State's men's golf team advanced to the semifinal round of match play at the NCAA Championships on Friday after posting a hard-fought 3-1-1 victory over Ohio State at Karsten Creek.
The third-seeded Cowboys knocked off the sixth-seeded Buckeyes to advance to Saturday's 10:45 semifinal match against Augusta State, creating a rematch of last year's title match at the event.
"That victory was huge. Ohio State was the underdog, there was no doubt about it," OSU head coach Mike McGraw said. "Those are hard matches to win, especially when you have five really hard-fighting kids that are coached by a guy (former Cowboy assistant Donnie Darr) that I think is probably the best coach in college golf period."
"It is all about moving on to the next round and we were lucky enough to do that today. We have a really tough opponent tomorrow. Josh Gregory's kids are tough as nails."
Freshman Talor Gooch got the Pokes started with a 4-and-2 victory over Alex Redfield. The Cowboy rookie took a lead with a par at the first before Redfield squared the match at the second with a birdie. A Gooch par at the fifth put him back in front before he took holes 7, 8 and 9 to move to 4-up at the turn. Redfield trimmed the deficit in half with wins at the 10th and 11th before Gooch claimed the 12th with a birdie and closed out the match with a par at the 16th.
Sophomore Sean Einhaus logged the squad's second point of the day with a 3-and-2 win over Michael Cress. The two exchanged wins over the first two holes before Einhaus took Nos. 3, 4 and 5. His lead was cut to two after Cress captured Nos. 7 and 8 with a par and birdie, respectively. However, Einhaus took a 3-up advantage with a win at the ninth. After Ness drew within one again at the 14th, Einhaus closed out the match with victories at the 15th and 16th.
OSU senior Kevin Tway won the first hole in his match against Brad Smith on his way to a 2-and-1 triumph to provide the third and deciding point. Tway got to 3-up on the front side before Smith's par at the 11th cut the margin to one. After Tway extended the lead back to two at the 15th. Smith took the 16th to move back within one as the duo headed to the treacherous 17th hole. Smith was unable to convert his bogey putt to extend the match with Tway draining his to close out the match.
Buckeye Dan Charen posted his squad's lone point of the day with a 1-up victory over OSU junior Morgan Hoffmann.
Fellow Cowboy junior Peter Uihlein halved his match with Bo Hoag with both players on the 17th hole when Tway clinched the match.
Duke knocked off top-seeded UCLA and will face Georgia at 10 a.m. (CST) in the other semifinal after the Bulldogs defeated Illinois.
