RUMFORD, R.I. - Oklahoma State's Peter Uihlein fired a 65 during the final round of the 50th Northeast Amateur Invitational en route to a three-shot victory at Wannamoisett Country Club.
In the process, Uihlein shattered the event's 72-hole scoring mark by four shots after tallying a 15-under 261 total at the par-69, 6,732-yard layout. The rising senior broke the previous tournament record of 265 set by Dan Woltman in 2009.
The victory added to an already impressive list of amateur victories for Uihlein over the past year. In addition to his title this weekend, Uihlein has also won the Sahalee Players Championship, U.S. Amateur, Dixie Amateur and the Georgia Cup over the past 12 months.
"This is a special tournament for me after all but growing up here," Uihlein said. "I've played the Northeast a few times and I'm really happy to have won it and join all the other great champions of the event."
The Orlando, Fla., native posted rounds of 66 and 68 before firing a 9-under 62 on Friday to surge to the top of the leaderboard heading into Saturday's fourth and final round. Holding a three-shot lead after 54 holes, Uihlein closed with a 65 to finish three shots clear of Georgia Tech's James White.
After an opening bogey, Uihlein quickly offset it with a birdie at the second before carding birdies at Nos. 5, 8 and 9 to turn at 3-under 31. The 2011 Ben Hogan Award winner added birdies at the 11th and 14th before finishing at 4-under par for the day.
OSU sophomore-to-be Talor Gooch also competed in the event, closing with a 66 to tie for 13th place at 2-under 274.
