STILLWATER, Okla. - Oklahoma State's men's golf team posted a 294 during the third day of stroke play on Thursday at the NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championship to finish tied for third place at Karsten Creek.
The Cowboys' 54-hole total of 879 knotted them with Illinois for third place at the par-72, 7,416-yard layout. UCLA won the stroke play portion of the event with an 872 total while Georgia Tech was second at 875 Rounding out the group of eight teams advancing were Georgia (5th), Ohio State (6th), Augusta State (7th) and Duke (8th). OSU held the tiebreaker over the Illini to secure the No. 3 seed for match play.
"We were five shots off the bubble (to start the day), which you couldn't help but know that, but what they did a good job of was playing well early, so they got way off that bubble," OSU head coach Mike McGraw said.
"The tournament starts anew tomorrow and it's going to be exciting. I know it will be. It's been exciting the last two years. I really loved it. It's been a lot of fun for us to be involved in it. I'm thrilled that we have a chance to do it here at home and I hope that means our fans are going to show up to watch us play because I think they can see a lot of exciting golf."
LSU's John Peterson posted a 72 to finish at 211 and claim NCAA medalist honors. His even-par closing score was good for a one-shot victory over UCLA's Patrick Cantlay.
After a runner-up finish at last year's NCAA Championships, OSU junior Peter Uihlein posted a 73 during his third round to finish at 215 and tied for third place. The Orlando, Fla., native tallied three birdies on his front side to turn at 1-under 35. Uihlein stood at 3-over for the day through 12 holes, but used an eagle at the par-5 14th before finishing with a string of pars to get in with his 1-over score for the day.
Senior Kevin Tway posted the squad's round of the day with a 72 to move into a tie for 38th place at 223. The Edmond, Okla., native snuck a birdie at the sixth among 15 pars before making a bogey at the 17th to move back to level par for the day.
"I hit it a little bit better today and kept the ball in play and hit a lot of greens. That's what you have to do in the wind and I made a lot of pars which is key," Tway said. "It's a whole new tournament now and stroke play is over so if I just keep making strides and each day getting a little bit better I think I'll be good."
Junior Morgan Hoffmann closed with a 75 to also finish at 223, while freshman Talor Gooch came in a shot back at 224 and tied for 50th.
Sophomore Sean Einhaus came in with a 74 to tie for 66th at 226.
OSU capped its day with Hoffmann, Tway and Uihlein earning PING First-Team All-America status.
The Cowboys will take on sixth-seeded Ohio State at 12:15 p.m. (CST) with the winner advancing to Saturday's semifinal round.
