STILLWATER, Okla. – Oklahoma State rising senior center Grant Garner is one of 42 student-athletes named to the 2011 watch list for the Rimington Trophy, the award's committee released today.
Garner, from Mesquite, Texas, started every game at center in 2010 and anchors an offensive line that returns all five starters and was tabbed by Athlon as the second-best unit in the country entering this season.
After seeing limited action behind experienced starters early in his career, Garner made a seamless transition into a starting role in 2010 and helped anchor an impressive offensive line performance by the Cowboys all season.
He was credited with seven knockdowns against Troy and Texas Tech and coaches named him OSU's most physical lineman against Texas A&M. He was OSU's offensive lineman of the week against Nebraska and Kansas State. A smart player who ranks among the nation's top centers as a senior, Garner was the leader of an offensive line that allowed just 10 sacks in 13 games to rank seventh in the country and helped the Cowboys finish third nationally in total offense and scoring.
The Rimington Award, which is presented annually to the nation's best center, is given to the player who receives the most first-team votes for the American Football Coaches Association, Walter Camp Foundation, Sporting News and Football Writers Association of America All-America teams.
The winner will be honored at the Rimington Trophy Presentation banquet at the Rococo Theater in Lincoln, Neb., on Jan. 14, 2012.
