AUGUSTA, GA. - Four players with Oklahoma State ties wrapped up the first day of play at The Masters Tournament on Thursday at Augusta National Golf Club.
Leading the Cowboy quartet was former All-American Rickie Fowler, who fired a 70 to stand in a tie for 14th. Fowler was one of 10 players to post a 2-under score on the day to come in five shots off the pace of co-leaders Alvaro Quiros and Rory McIlroy.
Playing in his first career Masters, Fowler bogeyed his first hole before reeling off 10-straight pars. After falling to 2-over with a bogey at the 12th, he caught fire down the stretch with four birdies over his final five holes to quickly move under par.
Current Cowboy Peter Uihlein finished among the group tied for 31st place with an even-par 72. The junior, who earned his first-ever Masters invite via his victory at the 2010 U.S. Amateur Championship, birdied two of his first three holes before moving back to level par with bogeys at Nos. 4 and 5. The Orlando, Fla., native settled in with four pars in a row to close his outward nine. Uihlein bounced back from bogeys at Nos. 10 and 13 with birdies at Nos. 15 and 18 to tie Japan's Hideki Matsuyama and Stanford's David Chung for the low round by an amateur on the day.
Former OSU standout Bo Van Pelt came in a shot behind Uihlein with a 73, tying him for 49th place, while Hunter Mahan finished the day tied for 75th place after an opening 75.
Uihlein will be the first Cowboy off tomorrow, starting his second round at 10:30 a.m. (EST). He will once again be grouped with Phil Mickelson and Geoff Ogilvy. Van Pelt will start at 12:31 p.m., while Fowler's group will be next to play at 12:42. Mahan will go off at 1:37 p.m.
