WACO, Texas – The ninth-seeded Oklahoma State women's tennis team was edged out of the 2011 Big 12 Championships Friday as the Cowgirls dropped a tough 4-2 match to top-seeded and seventh-ranked Baylor at the Baylor Tennis Center.
The Cowgirls, who lost to the Bears 6-1 earlier this season, started the day with a bang as they took two of three doubles matches to earn a 1-0 early advantage. It was the first time this season that BU has lost the doubles point to an unranked opponent.
“We knew what we needed to do to win and we knew the doubles point was going to be crucial to give us any chance,” coach Chris Young said. “Our girls went out with nothing to lose and played a great doubles point. I think that set the tone for a tough match to follow.”
Baylor took the first doubles match finished with an 8-4 win at No. 3, but OSU responded with 8-6 wins from Sasha Belova and Malika Rose at No. 2 and Nataliya Shatkovskaya and Kanyapat Narattana at No. 1 to complete the doubles upset. The No. 1 win marked the third time this dual season that Shatkovskaya and Narattana have defeated a top-60 doubles team, as well as their third-straight win.
Although singles play was closely contested at several matches, the Bears came out on top. Baylor was lead by its three top-50 singles players as they each won at Nos. 1-3, but the Cowgirls picked up another team point at No. 5 from Narattana, who won the regular season Big 12 title at the position with her 9-2 conference record.
The Bears sealed the team victory with a win at No. 6 to make the final score 4-2.
“Obviously at No. 5 singles, I am really proud of (Narattana),” Young said. “At No. 4 and 6 singles their girls just stepped up and played great tiebreakers in the first set and that was the difference. That is why Baylor is a really good team: they were able to step up at key moments when they really needed it.”
The Cowgirls finish the year with an 8-16 overall record while the Bears improve to 23-3.
