IRVING, Texas – Oklahoma State's Zach Johnson has been named the Big 12 Conference Newcomer of the Week for games played April 11-17, it was announced today by the league office.
Johnson, a native of San Ramon, Calif., helped the Cowboys to three wins in four games last week, including OSU's first series win against Bedlam-rival Oklahoma since 2008. In those four contests, the junior first baseman led the Cowboys with a .412 batting average (7-for-17) and collected two doubles, five RBIs and five runs. He also led the squad with a .706 slugging percentage.
In helping lead OSU to two wins over No. 8 OU, Johnson had five hits in 13 at bats (.385), including a team-best two doubles, and was second on the club with four RBIs. In the series-deciding finale, Johnson was 3-for-5 with four RBIs and two doubles and scored the winning run in the bottom of the 10th inning.
The Big 12 honors a player, pitcher and newcomer of the week every Monday during the regular season. The awards are voted on by a panel of media who cover the conference. This marks the fifth conference weekly award for a Cowboy player this season as Gabe Weidenaar (March 7) and Chris Marlowe (March 14) earned Big 12 Newcomer of the Week honors, Brad Propst was the Big 12 Pitcher of the Week on March 28 and Davis Duren garnered Big 12 Player of the Week honors on April 4.
