NORMAN, Okla. - Three members of the Oklahoma State men's golf team have been named semifinalists for the 2011 Ben Hogan Award it was announced today by the Golf Coaches Association of America.
Senior Kevin Tway and juniors Morgan Hoffmann and Peter Uihlein are among those still in the running for the award, which is presented annually to the top men's NCAA Division I, II or III, NAIA or NJCAA college golfer taking into account all collegiate and amateur competitions during a 12-month period.
Tway won The Players Amateur last summer and advanced to the match play bracket at the U.S. Amateur Championship. He narrowly missed on his second significant amateur title of the summer at the Trans-Mississippi Championship where he finished second.
In nine starts for the Cowboys this season, the Edmond, Okla., native has finished in the top 10 on six occasions. A semifinalist for the Hogan last year, Tway picked up his first collegiate victory of the year at the Augusta State Invitational in the squad's last outing. He is currently ranked fourth in the Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Index.
Hoffmann, who was a Hogan semifinalist as a freshman, competed at the 2010 U.S. Open at Pebble Beach Golf Links and reached the quarterfinals of the U.S. Amateur. Additionally, he posted a top-10 finish at the Nationwide Tour's Children's Hospital Invitational and competed at the Tour's Cox Classic as well.
At the collegiate level, Hoffmann has posted five top 10s this season for the Cowboys and picked up his first win earlier this spring at the Southern Highlands Collegiate Masters. The Wyckoff, N.J., native stands at No. 15 in the Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Index.
Last summer, Uihlein won the Sahalee Players Championship and competed at the Children's Hospital Invitational before becoming the fourth Cowboy to win the U.S. Amateur Championship in August. In September, he received the Mark H. McCormack Medal after finishing the amateur season as the top-ranked player in the World Amateur Golf Ranking. After winning OSU's fall opener at the Olympia Fields/Fighting Illini Invitational, Uihlein represented the U.S. at the World Amateur Team Championship and successfully defended his title at the Dixie Amateur in December.
Currently the top-ranked player in the country, Uihlein made the cut in March at the PGA Tour's Transitions Championship and competed at The Masters last week in Augusta, Ga.
The trio will be back in action this weekend when the Cowboys take part in the Aggie Invitational in Bryan, Texas.
