TUCSON, Ariz. - Oklahoma State suffered a 13-2 loss to Washington State in its opening game at the 2011 Dairy Queen Classic Friday at Kino Veterans Memorial Stadium.
The Cowboys threatened WSU ace Adam Conley early but were able to manage just one run in seven innings against the junior left-hander as OSU fell to 6-3 on the season.
OSU starter Brad Propst suffered his first loss of the season, falling to 2-1 after the senior right allowed four runs, three of them earned, on four hits in three innings of work.
WSU improved to 5-1 behind the strong pitching of Conley and with an offensive effort that saw the Cougars score 11 of their 13 runs with two outs.
The Cougars took an early lead in the top of the second inning. With one out, Matt Argyropoulos delivered a double off the wall in left-center field, and Jason Monda followed that with a double of his own to make the score 1-0.
Washington State added to its lead in the third. Kyle Johnson led off the inning with a single, and after Propst retired the next two hitters, Taylor Ard blasted his third home run of the season, a two-run shot to left-center field to push the WSU lead to 3-0.
WSU upped its lead to 4-0 in the fourth before the Cowboys finally got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the inning.
After leaving two runners stranded on the base paths in each of the first three innings, OSU led off the fourth with an opposite-field double off the wall in right field by Mark Ginther. After Luis Uribe followed with a single, Andrew Heck brought home the Cowboys' first run with a sacrifice fly.
Down 4-1, the Cowboys were unable to trim their deficit further when Davis Duren grounded into an inning-ending double play.
WSU maintained its three-run advantage until the seventh when the Cougars tacked on two more runs with another two-out, two-RBI hit by Ard, this one a single off Ian McCarthy to push their lead to 6-1.
The Cougars added two more runs in the seventh and tacked on five in the eighth, four of those of the unearned variety.
OSU's final run came in the eighth on an RBI single by Jared Womack, which plated Dane Phillips after the Cowboy designated hitter led off the frame with a double.
Phillips finished the contest 2-for-4 at the plate to extend a hitting streak dating back to last season to 11 games. He was one of five different Cowboys to collect two hits on the day.
The Cowboys finished with 12 hits, but WSU topped that with 15 hits against seven different OSU pitchers.
OSU returns to action Saturday against South Alabama. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m. (CST).
