TUCSON, Ariz. – Oklahoma State got back in the win column Saturday at the 2011 Dairy Queen Classic as the Cowboys tied season highs in hits and runs in a 13-1 triumph over South Alabama at Kino Veterans Memorial Stadium.
Backed by a Cowboy offense that racked up 19 hits, sophomore southpaw Andrew Heaney remained perfect on the season and was just two outs shy of tossing the first complete game of his career as the Cowboys improved to 7-3.
Six different Cowboys collected multiple hits in the contest, led by Dane Phillips' 4-for-5 effort that extended the sophomore's hitting streak to 12 games. Phillips added three RBIs, while Gabe Weidenaar was 3-for-6 and drove in a game-high four runs.
USA (6-4) took the game's initial lead by recording the first run of the season allowed by Heaney. Brent Tanner led off the inning with a double into the left-center field gap, and after taking third on a groundout, he scored on a single by Tilur Smith on a hit that bounced just over the glove of OSU third baseman Mark Ginther.
The Cowboys used a two-out rally in the fifth to tie the score. Luis Uribe got things started with a single, and Randy McCurry followed with a single of his own. Up next, leadoff hitter Hunter Bailey delivered a double down the left field line just past a diving USA third baseman Jake Overstreet to knot the score at 1-1.
The game remained tied until the top of the seventh, and once again it was the bottom of the Cowboys' order jump starting a rally. Uribe led off the frame with a double down the line, and McCurry followed by drilling a ball off the glove of Overstreet into left field to bring home Uribe with the go-ahead run.
OSU was far from done as the Cowboys would send 10 batters to the plate in the inning and push six runs across the plate.
Following McCurry's RBI single, a walk and a single loaded the bases for Phillips, who made the score 3-1 with an RBI single. Zach Johnson followed with a ground-rule double to bring in two more runs, and a two-RBI single by Weidenaar gave the Cowboys a 7-1 advantage.
OSU put the game away in the eighth with another six-run rally. The Cowboys got an RBI single from McCurry, two-RBI hits from Phillips and Weidenaar and a sacrifice fly off the bat of Uribe to make the score 13-1.
Heaney improved to 3-0 this season with his 8.1 inning outing as he scattered seven hits and struck out five while not issuing a walk.
Uribe and McCurry finished with three hits apiece for the Cowboys.
OSU closes out tourney play Sunday against Minnesota at 1:30 p.m. (CST).
