STILLWATER, Okla. – For the second-straight game, Oklahoma State won in its final at bat as Zach Johnson's sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 11th inning lifted the Cowboys to a 4-3 victory over New Mexico Saturday at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium.
The win was the fifth in a row for OSU, which improved to 11-3 on the season, and clinched the third-straight weekend series win for the Cowboys.
With the game tied 3-3 in the bottom of the 11th, OSU's Hunter Bailey drew a one-out walk against UNM's Bobby Mares. Up next, Davis Duren sent a ground ball to Lobos' third baseman Quay Grant, but Grant's throw to second wound up in right field and allowed Bailey to advance to third.
That put runners on the corners for Johnson, who worked the count full before lifting a fly ball to center field. Bailey scampered home and slid in safely just before the throw from Sam Wilson to give OSU the win.
Chris Marlowe picked up his first-career win for the Cowboys with a superb 4.2 innings in relief of starter Andrew Heaney. The junior right-hander racked up 10 strikeouts and allowed just two hits to get the victory.
As they did in the series opener, the Lobos (3-12) took the game's initial lead as they plated an unearned run in the first inning on an RBI single by D.J. Peterson.
UNM threatened to add to its lead as it loaded the bases with two outs, but Heaney got Luke Campbell to ground out to prevent further damage.
The Cowboys would go on top with two-runs in the second, getting a sacrifice fly by Mark Ginther for their first run and taking the lead on an RBI single by Johnson.
OSU added a run in the fourth on an RBI by Davis Duren to take a 3-1 lead, but the Lobos would rally in the seventh.
In that inning, Heaney walked the first two UNM hitters before a sacrifice bunt moved Lobos to second and third with one out and ended the sophomore southpaw's day on the mound.
Marlowe came in and promptly uncorked a wild pitch to bring home a run and then, after Kyle Stiner struck out, a second wild pitch allowed Wilson to race home with the tying run.
Over the next three-plus innings, pitching took over as Marlowe and Mares kept the offenses at bay.
Duren and Jared Womack led OSU's offensive attack as each collected three hits, while Duren and Johnson picked up two RBIs apiece.
OSU will look for its third-straight weekend series sweep Sunday when they face the Lobos at 1 p.m.
