STILLWATER, Okla. – Oklahoma State picked up its third weekend series sweep of the season Sunday as the Cowboys earned a 2-0 win over New Mexico at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium.
The shutout marked the fifth of the season for the Cowboys, who improved to 12-3 with their sixth consecutive win.
Mike Strong earned the win on the mound to improve to 2-0 on the season. The senior southpaw worked 7.1 innings and racked up eight strikeouts while allowing just three hits and one walk.
Closing the door for the Cowboys was junior Gabe Weidenaar, who pitched the final 1.2 innings to pick up his second save of the year.
OSU tallied the only run it would need in the third inning off UNM starter Rudy Jaramilllo. Hunter Bailey led off the frame with a single, and after stealing second, the Cowboy shortstop scored on a single by Zach Johnson.
The score remained 1-0 until the seventh, when OSU added an insurance run on a sacrifice fly by Davis Duren.
Strong, who faced just six batters over the minimum, cruised through the first seven innings before being pulled in the eighth with runners on first and second following a walk and an error.
But Weidenaar slammed the door on a potential Lobos' rally by coming out of the bullpen and getting Kyle Stiner to ground into an inning-ending double play.
OSU returns to action Tuesday when it hosts Central Arkansas at 4 p.m. before the Cowboys open Big 12 Conference play this weekend at Kansas.
