STILLWATER, Okla. - Oklahoma State suffered its first loss of the season Tuesday as Dallas Baptist snapped the Cowboys' three-game winning streak with a 7-3 triumph at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium.
A three-run fifth inning by the Patriots proved to be too much for OSU to overcome as the Cowboys fell to 3-1 on the season while DBU improved to 4-0.
DBU outhit the Cowboys by an 11-7 margin, and Josh Neilson suffered the loss after allowing three runs in just 1/3 of an inning in relief. Jordan Staples picked up the win in relief for DBU with five innings of work.
It did not take long for the Cowboys to fall behind as Austin Elkins delivered Mike Strong's first pitch of the game over the wall in left field to put DBU up 1-0.
However, OSU would answer in the bottom of the inning. Zach Johnson reached on a two-base error by DBU right fielder Jason Krizan, and an RBI single by Dane Phillips tied the score at 1-1.
The two teams remained knotted until the fifth. Back-to-back doubles by Tyler Robbins and Krizan made the score 2-1, and after a walk and a sacrifice bunt, Krizan would score on a wild pitch. DBU tallied its third run of the inning on a sacrifice fly by Kenny Hatcher to take a 4-1 advantage.
OSU trimmed its deficit in half in the sixth on an RBI groundout, but the Patriots rallied for two more runs in the top of the seventh to push their lead to four.
Both teams plated their final runs in the eighth, with Cowboy pinch hitter Devin Shines delivering an RBI double in the bottom of the frame to bring home Phillips with the final run of the contest.
Phillips was the lone Cowboy with multiple hits, while Robbins, Krizan and Ryan Behmanesh led the DBU attack against seven different OSU pitchers.
OSU returns to action with a three-game weekend series against Cal Poly that begins Friday at 4 p.m.
