STILLWATER, Okla. - Oklahoma State recorded a doubleheader sweep of Cal Poly Saturday at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium as the Cowboys opened with an 8-2 triumph before winning the nightcap, 1-0.
With the wins, OSU improved to 5-1 on the season while the Mustangs remain winless at 0-5. Cowboy starters Brad Propst and Andrew Heaney each picked up wins to run their records to 2-0 on the year.
OSU took an early lead in the opener. Jared Womack led off the bottom of the second inning with a double, and Luis Uribe followed with an RBI triple to make the score 1-0. The Cowboys added a second run on an RBI groundout by Andrew Heck.
Cal Poly tied the game off Propst with runs in each of the next two innings. In the third, an RBI double by Matt Jensen cut the Mustangs' deficit in half, and they tied the score at 2-2 in the fourth on a solo home run by David Armendariz.
But the Cowboys went back on top for good with a three-run rally in the fifth. Heck got things started with a bunt single to open the frame, then later stole second and advanced to third on an infield single by Zach Johnson. Dane Phillips brought that pair of runners home with a triple, and Gabe Weidenaar followed with an RBI double to give OSU a 5-2 advantage.
That was all the support Propst needed. The senior right-hander worked seven innings and allowed just two runs on six hits while striking out three.
OSU added a pair of insurance runs in the sixth on RBI singles by Hunter Bailey and Davis Duren, and the Cowboys' final run came in the eighth when Mark Ginther scored on an error.
Blake Barnes worked the final two innings on the mound and gave up just one hit to seal the win for the Cowboys.
In the second game, OSU scored the only run it would need in its first at bat as Womack recorded a two-out, RBI single to plate Johnson with what would be the game's only run.
From that point on, it was Heaney cruising through the Cal Poly lineup. The sophomore left-hander scattered four hits in eighth scoreless innings and struck out three.
Two of the Mustangs' hits came in the fourth on back-to-back singles by Mitch Haniger and Jensen, but Heaney worked out of the jam with a huge boost from his defense. With two outs and runners on first and third, CP's Tim Wise drilled a line drive down the third base line, but Ginther made a diving catch to end the inning and rob the Mustangs of at least the tying run.
CP would make things interesting in the ninth off OSU reliever Chris Marlowe. After the Cowboys' junior right-hander struck out the first two hitters in the inning, he walked Jensen on four pitches. Up next, DJ Gentile sent a single through the right side to put Mustangs on first and third. But Marlowe recorded his third strikeout of the inning by getting Wise swinging to earn his first-career save and give the Pokes the win.
OSU will look for its second-straight weekend series sweep Sunday when it takes on the Mustangs at 1 p.m.
