WICHITA, Kan. – Although sophomore Malika Rose maintained her perfect singles dual record, the No. 59 Oklahoma State women's tennis team fell to 1-6 Sunday, dropping a 5-2 match to Wichita State at the Wichita Country Club.
“Wichita State played a very good match and unfortunately we weren't tough enough to win the close matches,” coach Chris Young said. “We have two weeks to get that corrected.”
The Shockers scored first in the dual after sweeping all three doubles matches, although Kanyapat Narattana and Nataliya Shatkovskaya nearly claimed a win for the Cowgirls at the No. 1 spot as they fell in a tiebreaker, 8-7(5).
The trend continued in singles play, where Wichita State claimed two-set wins at Nos. 1, 4 and 2 to go up, 4-0, and seal the dual win.
In the three remaining matches, which were all decided with a tiebreaker third set, Shatkovskaya defeated WSU's Delia Damaschin at No. 3, sophomore Malika Rose improved her flawless dual record to 6-0 with a win at No. 5 and sophomore Leyla Simmons fell at No. 6 to make the final score 5-2, Shockers.
Oklahoma State, now 19-4 all-time against WSU, resumes play Feb. 26, traveling to Baton Rouge, La., to face LSU.
