KANSAS CITY, Kan. – Oklahoma State matched a program record with five players earning NSCAA All-Central Region honors in 2011, with a record four of those earning first-team honors, it was announced by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.
Cowgirls earning spots on the All-Central Region First Team were goalkeeper AD Franch, defender Melinda Mercado, midfielder Kyndall Treadwell and forward Krista Lopez. Defender Carson Michalowski was selected to the second team.
OSU also had five players on the All-Central Region team in 2010, and the three first-team honorees of a year ago was the program's previous high.
Franch, a junior from Salina, Kan., made the All-Central Region First Team for the third-straight year. Former Cowgirl star Yolanda Odenyo is the only other player in OSU history to achieve that feat.
Mercado also earned All-Central Region honors for the third time in her career. As a sophomore in 2009, she was named to the second team before earning first-team accolades in each of the last two seasons.
Treadwell, Lopez and Michalowski each collected All-Region honors for the second time. Lopez was also a first-team pick in 2010, while Treadwell and Michalowski were on the second team a year ago.
The Cowgirls' All-Central Region quintet led OSU to a record-setting season in 2011 as they compiled a 22-2-2 record and advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Women's Soccer Championship. OSU went on a 21-game unbeaten streak to open the season and also captured the second Big 12 Conference regular season championship in school history.
Franch, Mercado and Michalowski anchored the nation's top defense as the Cowgirls recorded 18 shutouts and allowed just nine goals in 26 games.
Lopez and Treadwell combined for 12 goals and eight assists, and both players ended their careers among the top 10 scorers in OSU history.
