Wide receiver is a first-team All-American by the AP for the second straight year.
STILLWATER, Okla. - Oklahoma State put six players on the 2011 Associated Press All-America team, it was announced today. Two-time Biletnikoff Award winner Justin Blackmon was a first-team selection, safety Markelle Martin was a second-team honoree and kicker Quinn Sharp, cornerback Brodrick Brown and offensive linemen Grant Garner and Levy Adcock were third-team selections.
The Associated Press All-America team is one of the five recognized All-America teams, joining the All-America squads of the Walter Camp Football Foundation, the Football Writers Association of America, the American Football Coaches Association and The Sporting News. To be considered a consensus All-American, a player must appear on three of the five recognized teams. The Sporting News All-America team will be announced Thursday.
By any measure, Blackmon has been the best receiver in college football the past two seasons. As a junior in 2011, he has 113 catches for 1,336 yards and 15 touchdowns despite facing perhaps the most extreme defensive strategies geared solely at stopping him of any player in the nation.
Garner, the 2011 Big 12 Offensive Lineman of the Year, and Adcock, a first-team All-American by both the AFCA and the FWAA, were stalwarts on an Oklahoma State offensive line that paved the way for one of the most feared offenses in the nation.
Martin and Brown were both semifinalists for the Thorpe Award given to the nation's top defensive back, with Brown leading the nation in passes defended this season.
Sharp has the distinction of being a 2011 All-American as both a kicker (FWAA and Associated Press) and as a punter (Rivals.com).
The Big 12-champion Cowboys take on No. 4 Stanford in the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl on Jan. 2.
