STILLWATER, Okla. - The No. 4 Oklahoma State equestrian team (3-3) fell to the Kansas State Wildcats, 12-10, on a breezy morning at Animal Science Arena Saturday.
"This was a frustrating end to what has been a very difficult couple of days," coach Larry Sanchez said. "We saw some things that we need to work on and intend to get those fixed before we compete in the Spring."
The Cowgirls earned three of the four possible MVPs on the day and outscored the Wildcats in raw scores, 1795-1777.5, but it wasn't enough to overcome a four-point team deficit entering the final discipline.
The hunterseat fell by a 7-5 margin, while the western team won in raw scores, 1022.5-981, after a 5-5 tie in team points. Freshman Katy Krshka shined once again when she earned her second MVP in four tries in reining with a 75.5-70.5 win over her Wildcat counterpart. Jenna Blumer and Christy McElreath added head-to-head team points in the discipline and Taylor New and Rachel Houchin tied, giving the Cowgirls a 3-1 advantage in reining.
Krshka brought in her second victory of the day when she won her head-to-head matchup in horsemanship, 80-77. Senior Mamie Tomlin gave the Pokes another point in the discipline but they were defeated in team points, 4-2.
Oklahoma State picked up victories in the first three head-to-head matchups in equitation over fences, but eventually tied the Wildcats in the discipline. Maggie Gampfer, Samantha Elser and Ali Rose all earned wins in the discipline. Elser was awarded an MVP for her 81-72 victory, her second such honor of the year.
Andrea Robbins won MVP honors in equitation on the flat despite falling in her head-to-head matchup. Leighona Bernstein earned a point in her first competitive ride of the season with an 83-82 victory. Senior captain Jordan White also won her head-to-head, 72-71, but the Pokes fell in the discipline by a 4-2 margin.
The Cowgirls will take a break for the remainder of 2011 and will be back in action when they travel to Auburn January 28, 2012.
