STILLWATER, Okla. – Oklahoma State had its school-record winning streak snapped, but the No. 2 Cowgirls remained undefeated as they tied Texas, 1-1, Friday night at the Cowgirl Soccer Complex.
With the draw, OSU is now 15-0-1 overall and 4-0-1 in Big 12 Conference play, and the Cowgirls remain atop the league standings.
Both teams recorded 19 shots in the match, with Texas scoring just under four minutes in before OSU notched the equalizer in the 57th minute.
“It was a great game; it was two very good teams going at it,” said OSU head coach Colin Carmichael. “It could have gone either way. The first 15 or 20 minutes, for whatever reason, we didn't play as well and perhaps they came out very strong and didn't let us play.
“They got the early goal, and it took us a while to recover. But after that, we edged it on chances. It was a very competitive, very high level game, and both teams can walk away with their heads held high and say they played a good game.”
Texas (9-5-1, 3-2-1) did something no other Cowgirl opponent has done this season just 3:49 into the match when Taylor Knaack connected with Kristin Cummins for a goal to give the Longhorns a 1-0 lead. The score marked the first time this season OSU had trailed in a game.
Neither team managed much offensively in the opening half as UT held a slight 5-4 advantage in shots. OSU's best chance came off a corner kick in the 26th minute, but Sarah Brown's shot was blocked by a defender.
OSU controlled the attack early in the second half and capitalized at the 56:35 mark. Krista Lopez sent a long pass ahead to Megan Marchesano, who blazed past a defender and delivered a shot from 15-yards out into the back of the net to tie the game at 1-1. The goal was Marchesano's fifth of the season.
Both teams had numerous chances the rest of the way. OSU goalie AD Franch had a pair of huge saves, diving to stop a shot by Lexi Harris in the 59th minute and then leaping to tip a shot over the crossbar on a free kick by Nina Frausing Pedersen from just outside the 18-yard box. Franch finished with four saves in the match.
Lopez, who led OSU with five shots, had a pair of near goals in regulation, sending a shot just wide into the side of the net in the 67th minute and then having a shot saved by UT goalie Alexa Gaul and cleared off the line by a Longhorn defender with just under five minutes remaining.
UT outshot the Cowgirls 4-3 in the two overtime periods, with OSU's best look coming when Marchesano fed Kyndall Treadwell in the box in the first overtime. Treadwell popped her shot into the air, and Gaul was able to make an easy save.
OSU returns to action next week with a trip to Waco, Texas, to take on Baylor before a Sunday showdown in College Station against Texas A&M.
